Alberta man charged with impaired driving in fatal crash

One person is dead and another is in serious condition after a Grande Prairie area crash in which a driver was allegedly impaired.

RCMP said a pickup and an all terrain vehicle collided Friday night in a field south of Grovedale, about 24 kilometres south of Grande Prairie.

Emergency responders declared a 21 year-old man dead at the scene. The Grovedale man had been passenger on the ATV, RCMP Cpl. David Lee said.

Paramedics took the ATV driver, a 22 year old Grovedale man, to a local hospital, Lee said. The man was transferred to a hospital in Edmonton, where he was in serious, but stable condition, police said. Neither of the ATV riders was wearing a helmet, Lee said.

Police charged the truck's driver, 21 year old Cole Penson of Grovedale, with impaired driving causing death, and impaired driving causing bodily harm. He's scheduled to appear in a Grande Prairie court Monday.
