Woman charged with impaired driving in fatal crash

Alcohol was a factor in a single vehicle crash that killed one person in MacKenzie County on Saturday night, RCMP said Monday.

Lola Maureen Cardinal, 42, of Grande Prairie, has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death and impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, among other charges.

Fort Vermilion RCMP were called to the crash on Highway 88 at about 8:30 p.m. A pickup truck had left the road and rolled.

The crash occurred on a straight, paved section of highway. It was raining at the time.

Cardinal and two male passengers were taken to hospital, police said. One man was treated and released, but the other man died as a result of his injuries. His name will not be released at the request of next of kin.

Cardinal is scheduled to appear in Fort Vermilion provincial court on Sept. 16.

Fort Vermilion is about 650 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
