Police have arrested a man accused of driving drunk on a southern Alberta highway which had been closed for the Tour of Alberta.

RCMP closed Highway 1A west of Cochrane, Alta. at around 12:30 p.m. on Friday for the second stage of the bike race.

Shortly after the closure began, RCMP said an officer spotted a vehicle heading westbound on the closed highway.

The driver, a 19 yr old man from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, was arrested at the scene. RCMP said his breath samples were "nearly double" the legal limit.

Two passengers in the vehicle, a 19 yr old and a 16 yr old, were also arrested.

RCMP charged the driver with impaired driving and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level exceeding .08.
