Police lay impaired driving charges after off duty Mountie killed while riding bike near Edson

Police have charged a 35 yr old man with impaired driving in the death of an off-duty RCMP officer struck and killed while riding his bike.

Const. Austin MacDougall, who worked at the Edson RCMP detachment, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Range Road 181, west of Edson, about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Flowers had been placed outside of the detachment Thursday and the flag lowered to half mast.

"Const. MacDougall was very involved in the community and the Town of Edson sends condolences to his family and to the RCMP detachment at this time. All flags at Edson facilities will be lowered to half-mast out of respect for this member and those affected by this tragedy," said a statement from the town.

Police resources from the Edson and Hinton detachments, as well as members of the Alberta RCMP criminal collision investigation team, were investigating.

Justin Lyle Jensen is charged with impaired driving causing death and refusing to comply with the demands of a peace officer. He was released on bail and is set to appear in Edson provincial court July 18.

Anyone with information about the fatality was asked to call police.
