A man has been charged with impaired driving causing death after a fiery collision killed a woman during the afternoon commute Monday.

Eric Lestar, 20, also faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and refusal to comply with a blood demand.

A woman driving a blue Nissan Xterra was struck from behind by a white Infiniti G37. Both vehicles careened into the ditch and the Xterra caught fire.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Infiniti was taken to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The crash, at 97 Street and 160 Avenue around 4:30 p.m., closed the area to motorists and caused traffic delays for hours.

The crash was Edmonton's 23rd traffic fatality in 2016.
